taula amiga (friend’s table) diagram

this is the diagram of all the main components of taula amiga farm table.

prototype-expanded

after the wood structure there are 8 layers:

layer 1 – 1000x4000mm – fabric, any soft material, old cotton sheets or old blankets are perfect materials. this layer is for protecting the thin film of PP plastic (layer2) from touching the non pollished wooden floor.

layer 2 – 1240x4240mm – PP plastic fim 0.2 > 1mm. this should be a food grade plastic. this layer is the main drainage membrane. if punched or not well sealed on the draining holes (10 per table) the water will damage the wood structure of the table.

layer 3 – 150L – drainage material can be small rocks, sand, expanded clay or any inert material. this layer can also be used has a water reservoir for capillarity systems.

layer 4 – 1000x4000mm – TNT fabric, used to prevent the roots from entering the layer 3

layer 5 – 1000x4000mm – wood net. this layer is for prevent any damage on the sub layers like working on the soil with big tools so when someone reaches this layer knows that’s the end of the soil :) the wood has also a secondary function. it will rot slowly producing heat and a home for micro life.

layer 6 – 10000L of coco fiber. coco fiber is an excellent soil structure, it retains moisture and nutrients, the roots have no problem on diving in it and is very light.

layer 7 – 4000L of humus. this is a lot of humus and this is just for one table. we already started the composting systems but we need to go fast or find local sources of good humus.

layer 8 – 1000x4000mm – wood net. this layer is to divide the table by family of vegetables, reinforce the side structure and hold the watering system in position.

local materials: posidonia oceanica

IMG_7412

every year in the spring we have algae arriving to the coast. this year we got posidonia fruits to use in taula amiga farm. this are balls of fibrous material that can be added to the compost, has a water reservoir in the draining system or added to soil has structure material.

IMG_7413

we also collect tons of plastics.. ;(

espai quiro farm containers II

uau, great day today!! we took apart pallets, cut some of them on strategic places, add screws , prepare some wood wheels and you get yourself a nice farm container :) all made with recovered materials from the surroundings.

next steppes will be building some more (will be dependent of the local-analog-crowfunding-campain that we are setting up:) and then apply our automatic watering system also made with urban trash ;)

will keep you posted :p IMG_6084 IMG_6086 IMG_6088

MACBA lettuces

on the 12th of november I went with sebastian to give a small workshop about transforming e-trash in a automatic watering system. this workshop is inside a wider educational program made by opensystems to the macba museum.

we needed a small farm so that we could implement the watering system but the museum doesn’t have any farm or garden so we decided to design one, prepare all the pieces and build it together. this is the first drawing :)

IMG_0992 - 2014-12-08 at 10-15-54

so we need a structure that could be easy assembled and we had certain limitations: it must have wheels and it must fit on the museum elevators :)

so here are some pictures of the building process and at the end you have a pdf manual that we made to care and maintenance of the farm. you can also find documentation and the 3Dmodel on the wiki.

BJDW day#14

third workshop and a fundamental one: make soap. why soap? making your won soap is important if you recycle your bathing water. is very easy to do, gives a solution to the used oil, you control the ingredients and is super cheap to make a amazing good soap. you find dozens of recipes on the web. seach for cold process soap recipe ;)

2014-10-01 at 16-46-57

uau, this workshop was full, we never thought we had so many people! we made 3 rounds of soap no time for pictures ;)

BJDW day#7

tomorrow is the official opening on bjdw. the exibitions will only open friday but tomorrow on the afternoon we’ll have the press and the openning party at dashilar’s market ;)

2014-09-24 at 23-22-27

last note on the building were we have the appartment. our neighbours don’t know what is a trash can and every night we arrive home there is mixed trash all over the hall and corridor. they just open the door and trough away. can be a tv a ipad box or the rest of someone’s dinner, you open the door kick the trash, close the door and by magical it desapears. now imagine a hole city like this ;(

IMG_3482

BJDW day#4

yeah… last night the air was more clean.. 113 city average.. this days have between 200 and 300.. this is not a nice place to live. not only humans but the hole city’s ecosystem is suffering.

IMG_3455

details, for some the above for us the below picture :p

IMG_3435

we have to make a lot of holes to the seed bank so we “invented” a gadget to help us on making all the holes vertical and equally distant.

IMG_3436 IMG_3438

IMG_3441

brasilian time to rest ;)

IMG_3443

here is the nice poster that re-up made for our bjdw colaboration ;)

IMG_3452

now the teas. for us this design week is an oportunity for people to come and see how easy is to make funcional structures. here is a detail on how can you store teas and spices and have hand available.

IMG_3453

BJDW day#2

pilar join us on this first day of cleaning and building.

IMG_3397 IMG_3399

IMG_3402 IMG_3403 IMG_3425

last note on materials. see this screws? we had 1 box (500) of them but the material was so low quality that when we try to screw them they just bend.. tomorrow we need to get better ones.. aparently torx heads is not very common here so let’s see what we can get ;)

BJDW day#1

ok we are in beijing again :)

IMG_3377

next weeks are full of activities: first we’ll start a 2 week workshop to build together our exhibition. the idea is that people can enter inside a house and visualize what tools do they need to sustain urban agriculture on their home. we started to planning this 2 months ago so now we have almost all the materials and tools needed but also a small community of 8 people willing to join this build together workshop. and we’ll start tomorrow with a tour on the neighborhood get screws and reclaiming materials such has wood, containers and home appliances.
we made already a draft of what we need to build and draw.

Screen Shot 2014-10-21 at 16.29.49

we’ll document our process, has always, but posting will be erratic since in china we can not easily access to our blog.. wunther why..
if you are around join us, we’ll have fun, make things together and eat delicious food :) also guilherme and emilson came with me so caipirinhas and good music are guaranteed ;) by the way, we plan to put our mojitos farm on action. check the beijing design week program to see where we are and come and get a free mojito, caipirinha or a delicious chinese tea :p
so let’s get to work we need woods ;)

IMG_3380

IMG_3382

mei mei, our producer :) dealing with prices.. here things never have a price, you must always negotiate.

IMG_3385

after we got the woods that were missing we when to visit the neighborhood were we are working and visit a special friend, lin lin. she and her team have a beautiful space just in the middle os dashilar. it’s called re-up and since is so close to our workspace we’ll also make some activities here:) great place tks lin lin ;)

IMG_3390 IMG_3391 IMG_3392 IMG_3395 IMG_20140918_135752

mantaining l’hort del circ part1

l’hort del circ is 100% made of recicled woods and once a year we need to paint everything to preserve the woods from the winter moister and the autumn rain. we normally get used oil from the local restaurants but today we’ll use 6 months of used oil from a friend’s family (tks laura;) we filter a bit and that’s it, just paint until the wood take some time to absorb the oil ;)

day#18,19 workshop @ iaac and fab10

apart from materials to make the farm structures we also need some more “tech” parts. today we went to solidança to get pressure switches, flow meters, water valves, water pumps, tubes and surprises that always come with the trash :)

next weekend we were invited to give a small workshop at fab10.org so we are also colecting extra materials.

2014-07-03 at 13-09-58 2014-07-03 at 13-23-39 2014-07-03 at 13-23-50

during fab10 Sophie Thomas and Nat Hunter from RSA are also giving a workshop about e-waste and design so we brought some e-waste for them ;)

2014-07-03 at 15-14-52 2014-07-03 at 15-15-18

we are trying to use 30 wood frames that were used on some iaac exhibition. they are a bit fragile so we designed some blocks to hold them.

2014-07-03 at 15-32-27 2014-07-03 at 17-15-59

for the fab10 we had to built a seed bank/business cards and a small farm so we went to ateneu de les corts were coda was working in a piece also to fab10.

day#13, 14 workshop @ iaac

busy day today :)

iaac rooftop

we have defined the form and start taking the materials to the roof.

during the last weeks we started collecting materials that are around us. here are some picture of what we found in and out iaac’s building

day#12 workshop @ iaac

ok. after 11 days of drinking knowledge and catch some potatoes ;) today we went hands on building the IaaC’s rooftop farm. first we went there and took some measures, look for sum exposition, orientation and imagine the space.

photo

then we went to the street, see what could we find arround the corner. we didn’t had to walk 10 meters. 4 10x10cm pine wood with no treatment just right in front of us :)

2014-06-12 at 12-51-10

also some wood pallets. we went to a chocolate milk factory tha’s arround he corner to see if they have one of thouse big food grade containers of 1000L. no luck it was closed like.. closed forever :(

then we went again to IaaC materials store. we knew there were many materials what we didn’t knew was how much!!

2014-06-12 at 13-11-25 2014-06-12 at 13-11-29 2014-06-12 at 13-11-33

after caring some materials and plan how to move everything up we went lunch with a friend of Xavi, Rosa Rull in Palo Alto. what was an old factory of flour and wool is now a huge forrest were the climbers have covered the buildings and there are bushes and trees all over the place. you see bees, people, birds and business all dialoging and their farm is exuberant!!

what a great lunch (paella nham nham) we had together under the vines, the caper and complemented by indian cress flowers. tks Rosa ;)

day#9 workshop @ iaac

today we started our two days tour over barcelona city trash. first stop: Solidança 2014-05-22 at 13-42-24 on our workshops we always have this idea of building with what’s available and every city has their own trash dinamics and trash resources. and barcelona would not be different. Talking with Isabel Gimeno from Solidança we both aggre that after joining EU there was a big efford on regulate the trash and since then we have a strong environmental protection policy and a cultural conscience started to grip. I’m a caver since 14 and I’ve saw many weels and deep caves filled with all sort of trash: cars, medicines, sick cattle, cloth, batteries, electronics, house and industrial sewage, just to name the ones you can quikly identify.. me and caves al over the world have spend incontless hours cleaning this mess many times preventing or at least reduce the inevitable water contamination that occours with this human behaviors. lucky in recent years we don’t see has many trash on the caves and generaly dumped next to a river flow. we have became cleaner in europe but we still have many unresolved problems: stuff that is impossible to reuse or recycle, lack of design for disassembling or designed to be imposible to repair, over consumering etc 2014-05-22 at 13-34-10 Solidança, apart of managing 4 big collection centers, brings new value and meaning to coth, electronics and house appliances. Solidança also has a strong social commitment. giving workshops of waste managment, electronics and electrical appliances reparation, gender equalty, new tecnologies, social competences, etc. 2014-05-22 at 16-29-21 Solidança also reseaches new protocols and systems with this idea in mind: work to reduce poverty and protect the environment. 2014-05-22 at 14-40-27 we were warmly recived by Miquel Caballé and Isabel Gimeno who gave us a quick tour and a long chat :) 2014-05-22 at 14-01-38 2014-05-22 at 15-02-00 2014-05-22 at 15-06-28 we then went strait to what was waiting for us: 60 washing machines. 2014-05-22 at 14-44-45 2014-05-22 at 14-52-38 2014-05-22 at 14-58-52 2014-05-22 at 14-58-57 2014-05-22 at 15-47-04 2014-05-22 at 16-07-12 and this is the final result: 6 pressure switches, 2 water pumps, 6 electro-valves, 1 flowmeter!! and several other things to you know.. hack :) we ended the day with Merce Jara (tks for all ;) with a suprising tour to l’Hort Fort Pienc. 2014-05-22 at 18-46-10 2014-05-22 at 18-46-56 2014-05-22 at 18-47-00

Ceramic pots irrigation

A very nice and didatic video about this very ancient irrigation method that uses ceramic pots (ollas).

It works with the same principle as the UFRRJ system, that uses ceramic filters as humidity sensors. The irrigation is controlled by the water saturation in the soil.

El Nagual

*** em português ao final ***
2013 was a year of many visits to gardens and other great places where I could meet nice people, prepare some workshops, present the Refarm project and assemble some irrigation systems.
I’ll start posting the memory of these meetings here at the site to document some of the refarm
adventures in Brazil  : )

In October, by invitation of leandro, who made a Refarm workshop with Hernani and me, I went to the El Nagual Biological reserve, located near Rio, where I was kindly received by Eraldo and a lovely group of volunteers who were doing work there, like the Low Constructors Descalzos, the Three House Community and many other good people.

The El Nagual is a familiar place, which carries much of the spirit from the Refarm project, bringing people together, food production, appropriate technology and good meals! : D

The garden there is beautiful, productive and organized !
During my brief residence, we opened new beds and did a workshop where we installed an automatic drip irrigation system in some parts. Here are some photos taken by my friend Alice Alfano :::

::: Em Português :::

talk with students about ocean contamination and ecodesign

IMG_8074

today I gave a talk to the students of Visual Comunication and Design in the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. I started with this article and then show pictures of cris jordan. them I moved to ecodesign telling my personal evolution has a designer with stories were I found trash designed by me and how I now approach to design with considerations for the environmental impacts during the lifecycle of a product. Rio de Janeiro, has all the big cities, still make today the worst examples on how our daily live cause huge damage to other species that we share the same round planet.
