MACBA lettuces

on the 12th of november I went with sebastian to give a small workshop about transforming e-trash in a automatic watering system. this workshop is inside a wider educational program made by opensystems to the macba museum.

we needed a small farm so that we could implement the watering system but the museum doesn’t have any farm or garden so we decided to design one, prepare all the pieces and build it together. this is the first drawing :)

so we need a structure that could be easy assembled and we had certain limitations: it must have wheels and it must fit on the museum elevators :)

so here are some pictures of the building process and at the end you have a pdf manual that we made to care and maintenance of the farm. you can also find documentation and the 3Dmodel on the wiki.

uau!! 2 lines that made us jump of joy :) so next september you will find us in brasil developing a electronic faucet/valve that can be made in a 3D printer. here you can see our proposal.

I’ll keep you posted on the developments here on the blog and on the wiki. please if you want to contribute feel free. the e-valve is a complex project so every help is welcome ;)

• informations :

Refarm the city and GREEN RUSH together, they propose a Paris site-specific joint residency to develop a mobile seed|compost exchange ecosystem based on face to face social network and smart phone geolocation interface for a territorial expansion of that network. Seed packets replace tobacco packs of the self-dispensing tobacco machines found at high human traffic spots. Dispensing machines converting Euros in Food guaranties. When exchange social gatherings are hold Food scrapes and leftovers replace Euro as trading currency for seeds. Seeds deposited and distributed are tracked with a web interface – their origin, growth and usage (recipe). Compost collected are documented – from local restaurants, breadshops and the urbanites. A self-devised compost deposit and collecting system calls for participation of the eco-loving Parisians! Seeds planted held together our collective dreams for growth. Open source compost is sexy with worms in action. The end-of-residency performance brings together worm noise, seed germination, food sharing into a storming love affairs between la Graine et le Compost.

next stop paris :)

here we go again :) the next 3 weeks I’ll be in paris with andreu, andreas, shu lea (greenrush), samuel and fransini working on the project la graine et le compost.

we will try to build together software and hardware tools that can we bring local seeds to urban farmers and promoting compost and social exchange. as usual, if you are in paris pay us a visit and we will find a way for you to contribute. leave here some screenshots of the software development until now.

l’hort del circ

as you know we were invited by to give a refarm workshop and built something that could last after the festival finish.

I think that there was a miss understanding at the beginning: before we had our first meeting, the organizers though that we need some physical conditions: a place for the 4 days workshop and soil! and imagine what? they got us a place! uau:) a real place with+- 450m2 in the middle of a city.. applause!! refarm has always demand for sun, not soil. that’s why our farms were small and have wheels. the cities are always moooving… for the first time re:farm will have a permanent spot inside a city, what a great opportunity to develop a good planning through the year and build an environmental education center with a city focus and a more balance use of the local resources and global knowledge.

this is a work in progress so if you want to give us a hand you are more than invited.

enjoy the pictures :)

came to gijon this weekend to another ecolab meeting. it’s amazing how much work has been done in 7 saturdays..

this weekend we build the lake, took care of the plants, draw some diagrams and worked on the cartography of the space.

ecolab funcion list diagram

keep following this co-work here

we got a lab

F.. long time that we’ve been struggling to have it and now we were invited to use it as much as we can :D

refarm the city project was invited to participate on the development of ecoLAB, an initiative of plantaformacero born at LABoral art center of gijon. it’s a one year collaborative project were we are going to develop some tools for urban farmers. but the best part is that we will not be alone :) great guests were invited: andy gracie, susanna tesconi, the guys from zoohaus, cova dos ratos, our friends maki, rubén and other collectives from spain.

here is our canvas

we will dedicate a page to these developments, go and check it :)

what a niiiice workshop we had :) for the ones that have the pleasure to know donostia you can imagine the great time that we had here. great food, great weather, great people and an amazing landscape. here you feel the power of the nature on all her glory :) the sea is strong, the trees are huge, the green is dense and the people are mimetic to these surroundings.

we where invited by jon and josemi. they are both professors at the university of architecture. the day started with david juarez from straddle 3 describing the flying 5Y journey of their recent co-work on open.hack.arquitecture. a work where ecosystems and the needs of home or public space for humans are in a constant dialog. like josemi observed “david has spoken 1 hour and breath 2 times” a breathless presentation indeed! then I made a smaller (and slower;) presentation of the refarm project, we all went to eat and then we started to built. we built a hanging farm and a vermicompost based on this design. we didn’t find fabric on the streets so the vermicompost is unfinished. the farm has mentha piperita and allium schoenoprasum obviously we made 1/2 L mojitos for everyone when we finished the workshop :p on the farm we implement the watering system but is unfinished. the water pump is not in a very good condition, should be replaced. we didn’t finish the holes in the tubes and we must put the sensors in place and the board. luckily there is an “arduino” group here in donostia so the electronics implementation should be easy :)

november report

great november I should say.. we’ve been in cáceres making farms with wheels, we had a food-meeting in feed our bodies and draw great plans together around the table on open-air :) news soon I promise.  in between I’ve been fighting with eagle (the software that I use to draw the electronic boards) and the boards are almost ready for factory. since we are in a hurry and we don’t have a lot of cash we’ll produce only 20 each. there are 3 boards now: refarm on vacations, refam on the sofa and refarm lights on. we’ll postpone to january 2 boards: refarm on the wall and refarm on mini vacations. all to fit in buenos aires schedule. buenos aires?? yep, buenos aires.. we were invited by the artist judith villamayor to collaborate on her project me and tiago we’ll be in argentina from 29jan > 10mar. if you are near you know, be our guest and come refarming with us. talking about who is near who and friends that you miss around you, we never thought that we would have the chance to visit so soon our friends, santiago, belén and nahuel :)

cu soon hehehe

LABoralthanks nature our farms are growing, and they will stay like this during the summer. since nature is doing her job we will go and make other stuff also important for a decent urban farm: DIY refarm-electronic-low-budget-tool-kits :D and are co-producing this big-tech-camp-event just in the middle of asturias. a week of hacking, testing and have fun for all the family or as they say: “El SummerLAB es un evento participativo que se organiza con la colaboración de todxs aquellxs que quieran compartir sus conocimientos y habilidades relacionadas con la creación audiovisual y arte interactivo para potenciar la interconectividad de la escena digital española.”

from 2nd to 7th of august you will have a place to camp, big nature just at your side, and a lot of technofrikis around those days:p there are a plenty of activities planned (check on their blog) and re:farm was invited to make 1 of them. we are gonna built a low budget watering system and a data visualizer of temperature and humidity. so, get your phone and call them write now. no phone? ask by email, snail mail, fax, make a tattoo, send a message in a bottle, do whatever you need to get your place… the re:farm workshops are limited to a small amount of humans…

just in case you can’t go.. cool, we will post the process on this blog and you can always be part of the online group.

re:farm the city @ wanås foundation

recently we have been invited to participate in a project in sweden. the project calls THE ALLOTMENT PLOT and it will be located in Foundation Wanås this summer. the project is leaded by a group of six landscape architect students from the Swedish University of Agriculture and they, as us, want to bring the production of food to the public places and near the people. stay in touch for future developments ;)
